Is Astrology Real?

Astrology has fascinated humanity for centuries. Some people think it gives a deep understanding of personality, relationships, and fate and claim that they see a 90-95% accuracy. For them astrology is a constant guide and source of wise counsel. While others see it as pseudoscience. The debate about whether astrology is real continues to spark curiosity and controversy.

In this blog, we share our perspective on the origins of astrology and why we believe that when ancient astrological principles are used by a skilled intermediary, they give amazing results.

What is Astrology?

Astrology studies celestial objects to predict human behaviour and future events. It is based on the principle that the positioning of planets and celestial bodies at the time of a person's birth influences their personality, character, and destiny. Astrology believes that each planet has a specific influence on different aspects of our lives, such as love, career, and health.

Indian astrology, also known as Vedic astrology, is based on the ancient Hindu scriptures and follows the lunar system.

The Vedas, which are among the oldest sacred texts of India, contain references to astronomical and astrological concepts. The Rigveda, for example, includes hymns related to the movements of celestial bodies and their potential influence on Earth.

The foundational texts for Vedic astrology are the "Jyotisha Vedanga" (limbs of the Veda), which are part of the six auxiliary disciplines associated with the Vedas. The most significant work in this context is the "Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra," attributed to the sage Parashara. This text, composed around the 6th century BCE to 2nd century CE, provides comprehensive guidelines for predictive astrology, including the use of birth charts (horoscopes) and various predictive techniques.

The "Surya Siddhanta," believed to be composed around 400-500 CE, is another crucial text that addresses astronomical and mathematical aspects of astrology. It explains the calculation of planetary positions, eclipses, and other celestial phenomena.

Astrology in ancient Indian texts is based on the concept of "karma" (actions) and the idea that celestial bodies influence human life and destiny. The birth chart, or "Janma Kundali," is a fundamental tool in Vedic astrology, created by mapping the positions of the planets at the time of a person's birth. Astrologers use this chart to analyse various aspects of an individual's life, such as career, health, relationships, and spiritual growth.

The nine planets (Navagrahas) considered in Vedic astrology are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Each planet is associated with specific qualities and influences different aspects of life.

There are several sources of great masters teaching us about Indian astrology and one such video is of Sri Sri Ravishankar Ji that can be found below.

Modern astrology in India often combines traditional Vedic principles with contemporary Western astrological concepts. Indian astrology weaves these signs into a broader tapestry of cosmic energies, offering a comprehensive understanding of one's destiny and life path.

Challenges for Astrology and Its Practitioners

In the realm of Vedic astrology, the quality of predictions is heavily dependent on the practitioner's deep understanding of the ancient principles, keen observational abilities, and a nuanced interpretation of celestial configurations. This has faced challenges not only due to a declining number of skilled practitioners but also due to translation losses over the years.

The shifting dynamics of society have led to a dwindling number of dedicated individuals embracing the demanding path of mastering this ancient science. As promising youngsters gravitate towards alternative professions, the shortage of adept practitioners has become increasingly evident, compromising the precision and reliability of astrological guidance.

In addition, there are broadly two types of translation loss—one arising from the translation of astrological texts from one language to another and another resulting from the interpretations of students, introducing potential distortions. In addition, there have also been documented and anecdotal recorded incidents where additionally, some experts chose to withhold certain knowledge, contributing to a deliberate loss to maintain their supremacy and retain secrets within their ranks.

However, in the face of this decline, the integration of modern technology, particularly machine learning, offers a potential solution to revive and enhance the practice of Vedic astrology. Machine learning algorithms have the capacity to process vast amounts of astrological data, recognize patterns, and derive insights that may escape human observation. By feeding these algorithms with historical astrological records and case studies, machine learning models can learn from the accumulated knowledge of seasoned astrologers and provide more nuanced and data-driven predictions.

The Astrology Debate: Personal Experiences vs. Scientific Scepticism

As those who have benefitted from astrology, we stand as witnesses to the positive impact that astrology has had on many individuals, ourselves included. Countless stories abound of accurate astrological insights shaping decisions and altering the course of lives. For those who swear by astrology, personal experiences often serve as powerful testimonials, aligning seamlessly with their astrological profiles. The intriguing concept that celestial configurations can influence individual behaviour and events has resonated deeply with us, leading to a profound appreciation for the art and science of astrology.

I have written a blog recently on how my life has been affected positively with astrology and how the quality of the astrologer remains extremely important to accuracy. You can find it here

However, it's crucial to acknowledge the skepticism that pervades the scientific community regarding astrology. Despite these criticisms, the enduring popularity of astrology persists, with many individuals turning to it for guidance in life decisions and relationship dynamics. Its impact on individuals' lives and its cultural significance cannot be ignored. Ultimately, the validity of astrology may be a matter of personal belief and subjective interpretation, but its enduring influence is an undeniable force in our collective experience.
